Meet the Kilimanjaro and Beyond Staff

Mountain Guides

Each of our guides is a professional with a deep understanding of the mountain and is Wilderness First Responder Certified, with education in treatment for High Altitude Cerebral, Pulmonary Edema and Acute Mountain Sickness. Most of the guides are so experienced they have summited Kilimanjaro well over 100 times! The lead guide is responsible for coordinating the porters, chefs, and most importantly, ensuring your safety. The guides are the leaders of the trek, set the pace, often saying “pole, pole” (slowly in Swahili), and monitor the health and safety of the climbers.

To climb Kilimanjaro, you must have a guide. But at Kilimanjaro and Beyond we are committed to providing you with the highest quality guides and porters available. We think each of our guides is phenomenal, and after meeting them, we think you will too. They are all registered with Kilimanjaro National Park,  speak English fluently, and are highly trained in mountain safety, plant and animal identification, and history.

You will like our small group sizes because you will get more personalized attention and a better experience throughout your whole tour. Our guides like our small group size because they can monitor the safety and progress of each climber, leading to higher success rates.

Here at Kilimanjaro and Beyond we love food. This is why it is important to us that our clients eat well.  Our chefs coordinate the meals to ensure that you have the proper caloric intake and hydration to successfully summit.  We offer not only vegan and vegetarian options, but also gluten free! Please tell us at booking about any special dietary needs and we'll make sure you eat well on the mountain.

Porters

Hiking Kilimanjaro is a difficult experience. To ensure you and the guides are taken care of we have an amazing support team of porters and waiters that make your trip as smooth and enjoyable as possible.

Your job on the mountain is to climb. Our incredible staff of porters will bring your personal gear as well as all the equipment needed for the tents, cooking, eating, and medical supplies to each campsite. (We did say they are incredible.)

Social Sustainability

Our guides and porters are awesome, so we treat them that way. Guide and porter welfare is of the utmost importance to us.

We do not tolerate unfair treatment of our staff. For every climb, and every porter we ensure:

  • Above the minimum wage agreed upon by the porters unions

  • Make salary payments within 2 days after the descent of a climb

  • Provide the appropriate number of porters so that porters carry no more than 33lbs (20kg) for the company weight

  • Implement a tipping procedure to ensure that the porters receive the full amount of tip intended for them

  • Provide the porter with 3 nutritious, filling, and preferred meals per day and cover food costs for the crew

  • Good quality tents and ground sheet

  • Assist with the descent of an ill porter and provide for medical treatment

  • Establish a policy against the payment of jembe (bribe) and declare that kirunje (stealing extra tip money) is not tolerated
